ISLAMABAD: In the aftermath of a heated confrontation, the Lahore police took decisive legal action on Monday, lodging a case against 38 Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) workers and leaders for their alleged involvement in acts of arson and vandalism along Mall Road.

The case, emanating from the apprehension of PTI leaders and activists during the Mall Road protest, was formally registered at Anarkali police station, encompassing a myriad of grave charges including terrorism, abduction, governmental interference, and harassment.

Among the named individuals in the case are 38 activists, notably PTI leader Hafiz Farhat Abbas, along with Fauzia, Hadira, and Hamida Bibi. According to the First Information Report (FIR), Hafiz Farhat Abbas purportedly incited PTI workers to vandalize public property and ignite fires during the protest. It further alleges that the PTI cadre also inflicted damage upon an official vehicle.

Furthermore, Hafiz Farhat Abbas and unidentified associates are accused of unleashing gunfire, resulting in the striking of an official vehicle. The FIR also contends that Hafiz Farhat Abbas and his cohorts tore the uniform of a constable and attempted to abduct him, with the constable being subsequently rescued from Istanbul Square. Upon apprehending Hafiz Farhat Abbas, law enforcement reportedly seized a firearm, as well as batons and sticks from the 42 individuals arrested.

The police's forceful response against PTI supporters and the subsequent arrest of over 100 members during nationwide protests, triggered by allegations of electoral malpractice in the recent general election, has drawn sharp criticism. The PTI had orchestrated these protests to demand the reinstatement of what it perceives as its "stolen mandate" from the February 8 election, in addition to the immediate release of party leaders, including founder and former Prime Minister Imran Khan.
