Engro Fertilisers' Chief Financial Officer, Ali Rathore, revealed at a recent media workshop that their anticipated contribution to the project's capital expenditure exceeds $100 million. Despite ranking fifth globally in urea consumption, Pakistan has yet to make significant investments in capacity growth, especially in the face of a rapidly expanding population.

Rathore emphasized the pressing need for a consistent and uniform policy on gas pricing to encourage fertiliser manufacturers to expand their capacities. Large-scale, globally competitive fertiliser plants demand multi-billion dollar investments, and rectifying gas pricing anomalies can incentivize manufacturers to modernize and expand, improving overall efficiency.

A crucial development has been the removal of subsidies for fertiliser manufacturers on the Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) and Sui Northern Gas Pipeline Ltd (SNGPL) networks, representing 60% of all fertiliser manufacturing capacity. While gas prices for these networks have surged by approximately 200%, manufacturers on the Mari network, such as Fauji Fertiliser Bin Qasim and Engro Fertilisers, continue to enjoy subsidised gas at Rs580 per mmBtu.

Rathore highlighted the industry's challenge with discriminatory gas pricing, causing varying urea prices in the market. The recent urea bag prices for Fauji Fertiliser Bin Qasim and Engro Fertilisers stand at Rs5,489 and Rs4,649, respectively, compared to Rs4,139 and Rs3,767 before the gas price hike. Meanwhile, Fauji Fertiliser Company (FFC) and Fatima Fertiliser maintain a stable urea bag price at Rs3,767.

This pricing disparity has created opportunities for middlemen, but a unified gas pricing strategy promises to level the playing field for all fertiliser manufacturers, aligning input costs and stabilising urea prices across the country.
