BEIJING: The death toll from a landslide in China's Yunnan province has climbed to 20 as rescue teams grapple with freezing temperatures and snow in their efforts to locate numerous missing individuals.

Rescue operations persisted throughout the night as teams sifted through deep layers of soil at the landslide site in Zhenxiong County, as reported by state-owned China Central Television (CCTV) on Tuesday.

According to a statement from a rescuer, the utilization of large machines is challenging due to the unstable soil. The Cover, a local media outlet owned by the Sichuan Daily Newspaper Press Group, quoted the worker as saying, "If the excavation is unloaded below, the top may continue to collapse. It is difficult to carry out large-scale mechanical operations, and it is very difficult to rescue on-site."

Following the landslide on Monday, at least 47 people from 18 households were reported missing, with 20 confirmed dead, according to CCTV. The rescue team had accounted for three individuals, leaving 24 still missing. Two people were hospitalized for head and body injuries, as reported by the national health commission.

The landslide struck two villages in the southwestern city of Zhaotong around 5:51 a.m. (2151 GMT), burying houses in brown mountain soil at the foot of a hill, according to CCTV. A witness named Gu, who saw the landslide, recounted, "The mountain just collapsed, dozens were buried." Gu mentioned that four of his relatives were among those buried under the rubble, as they were asleep in their homes.

Over 500 people were evacuated from their residences, according to CCTV.

Officials revealed in a press conference on Tuesday that the landslide was triggered in a steep cliff area at the top of a mountain slope.
