In a devastating incident, at least 12 miners lost their lives in a gas explosion at a coal pit in Harnai, Balochistan, Pakistan. The explosion, which occurred late on Tuesday, trapped workers about 240 meters underground, leading to a subsequent cave-in. Rescue efforts continued overnight, with the bodies of the 12 miners recovered by Wednesday.

The incident also trapped eight individuals who were attempting to rescue their colleagues. They were eventually brought to safety, some of them unconscious, by a government rescue team.

Abdullah Shahwani, Balochistan's director-general of mining, confirmed on Wednesday that the gas explosion was caused by methane gas, a common hazard in the coal-rich western regions of Pakistan.

This tragic event serves as a grim reminder of the risks faced by miners in their line of work. It also underscores the importance of stringent safety measures and regulations in mining operations to prevent such disasters in the future.
