Alma Jaroor, a 12-year-old girl from Gaza, experienced a harrowing ordeal during the Israel-Gaza conflict in December 2023. Buried under the rubble of a five-storey building in downtown Gaza City for over three hours, Alma's courage and resilience shone through as she pleaded with rescuers to save her family before her.

"I'm Alma," she told them. "Don't help me first. Help my mum and dad. And please help my brother Tarazan. He's a baby, 18 months old."

Alma's plea was heart-wrenching, but the rescuers reached her first. Miraculously, she clambered out from between jagged slabs of concrete and twisted metal bars unaided, coated in dust but with no major injuries.

However, the joy of her survival was overshadowed by the loss of her family. She pointed to the rubble where her family lay, her words a mix of grief and disbelief.

Three months later, Alma shared her story with the BBC. Sheltering with her uncle Sami and his family in a tent in Rafah, in southern Gaza, Alma recounted the horror of waking up under the rubble, the smell of blood, and the desperate cries for help.

"I remember waking up under the rubble. I checked my iPad, and saw it was 09:00. I hoped my brother Tarazan would still be alive. I was calling out to him, and holding on to hope that one of them would be alive," Alma recalled.

But her hope was shattered when she found Tarazan's remains. "I lifted the blanket that was covering him. I found him in an unimaginable state, his head severed," she said, her voice filled with sorrow.

Alma's story is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit in the face of unimaginable tragedy. Her strength and courage serve as an inspiration to all, highlighting the need for peace and the protection of innocent lives in conflict zones.
